Description
Urn shaped vase with deep sang de boeuf flambe glaze. Glaze trimmed at foot, foot rim also trimmed. According to an early 20th C. note in ink inside the vase, (written by an American woman who lived in Asia in the early 20th C., where she acquired the vase: "Sunday Berth (sic: clearly she means 'Sang de Boeuf') is the name of this chinese vase. It was made about 300 years ago during the reign of the Emperoer Kanhi (sic: She means Kangxi) a great patron of art. Manchu Dynasty. He offered a title and estate to the artist who could make a wine colored vase out of pottery. Experiments were made. An artist found that a blue mineral (now all used up and gone) if mixed with gold and baked, would produce this color of red. The vase can't be reproduced today. Its a 17 century vase." Minor firing flaws to surface; no chips, cracks, hairlines, etc. Stored in an attic for 50 years. Approx. 11 1/4" H.
