Description
"Pecheli, sive Peking, Imperii Sinarum Provincia Prima" was created by Johannes Blaeu in approx. 1655. It depicts the Chinese province of Pecheli, also known as Hebei, with the city of Beijing (then known as Peking) at the center. The map is adorned with intricate details, including depictions of mountain ranges, rivers, and cities. The hand colored cartouche is ornately designed with Chinese-style artwork and the scale is given in both Chinese and European measurements. This map was created during a time when European powers were attempting to establish trade relationships with China and gain knowledge of its vast geography and culture. It provides a glimpse into the European fascination with China during the 17th century and the growing interest in cartography and exploration.
