Despite being ridiculed by the younger fishermen in his village, Santiago sets out to sea alone and manages to hook the marlin. He spends several days fighting the fish, struggling with exhaustion and hunger, but ultimately manages to kill it. However, on his way back to the village, sharks attack and devour the marlin, leaving Santiago with nothing but its skeleton. Despite his physical defeat, Santiago gains the respect of the villagers and teaches the young boy who assists him the value of perseverance and resilience in the face of hardship. The novel is a powerful meditation on the human spirit and the struggle to find meaning in life.
