Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Ruth Rauschenburg (American, 20th century). Watermelon. Oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on upper right corner of verso. A whimsical oil painting portraying a scene from a hot summer's day: a succulent sliced watermelon on a checkered picnic blanket. Carved into wedges, the juicy fruit is depicted in an abstract manner from multiple viewpoints, all in a vibrant palette of generously layered oils - creating a composition both richly textured and reminiscent of Cubism. A fork and spoon are placed in two of the corners, situated diagonally from one another in a way that both mirrors the perpendicular angles that dominate the piece and helps frame the scene. A fabulous painting that intriguingly demonstrates both Cubist and Pop Art influences! Size with frame: 15.8" L x 11.7" W (40.1 cm x 29.7 cm); without frame: 17.4" L x 13.3" W (44.2 cm x 33.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA; ex-Slotin Folk Art, Buford, Georgia, USA, November 9th, 2014, lot 1125
