Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari), ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A remarkable and rare copper mace or finial with a janiform face, that was used as a weapon or ritualistic instrument- a pair of crotal bells resting to the sides of the cylindrical socket. The stylized face on both sides has wide, diamond shaped eyes and a small upturned mouth just under the massive nose. The noses form a brutal spike that could certainly deal a deadly blow to someone's skull. Maces and blunt clubs were widely used by Pre-Coumbian Peruvian cultures, and baton like weapons were both used in war and ceremony, and the heft on this piece and bells would make it suitable for both battle and ritual! Size: 4.5" L x 3.75" W x 3.3" H (11.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 8.4 cm)
In order to fashion a well fitting handle to the mace head of stone or metal - some cultures would place the head onto a living tree branch and allow the branch to grow, fusing around the head before cutting the branch - ingenious!
