Ralph Gibson is a contemporary American photographer whose work combines an interest in formal abstraction with erotica. His surreal black and white photographs, have been compared to the earlier photographer Minor White. Born on January 16, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA, he studied photography while in the US Navy. Gibson later attended the San Francisco Art Institute where he began using a Leica camera. Notably, the artist worked as assistant for both Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank early in his career. Enamored with making photo books, in 1970, his hallmark book Somnambulist was published. Gibson has since completed over 40 books, many of which were self-published under his company, Lustrum Press. Gibson lives and works in New York, NY. His works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
