Artist Biography:
Berenice Abbott was an American photographer best known for her portraits of New York City in the 1930s, as well as her scientific photography. Born in Springfield, Ohio in 1898, Abbott studied at Ohio State University before moving to New York in 1918 to study sculpture. She became interested in photography in the 1920s and worked as an assistant to Man Ray in Paris, where she developed her own style of portraiture. Upon her return to New York in 1929, Abbott embarked on a project to document the city's changing skyline, and her photographs of this period are some of her most iconic works. Abbott continued to work as a photographer and teacher throughout her life, and her work has been exhibited and collected by major museums around the world.
