Description
3.125" x 2". Nickel plated non-ferrous metal (likely tin) with central star and geometric borders with oak leaves at the corners.Two-piece type with riveted attachment hardware. This buckle is of indeterminate origins, with an example found on page 417 of Sydney Kersis' book on US buckles and plates. However, the method of attaching the tongue via rivets is not commonly found on belt plates prior to the last quarter of the 19th century, and thus it is believed by some to be of post-Civil War production. In any case, this plate is quite rare and is not often encountered. **Good condition overall. Some moderate flaking of nickel finish with darkening to a gunmetal patination in exposed areas.** $200-$400
