Description
1864 Civil War 1ed Life w/ 49th Massachusetts Volunteers Illustrated Portraits
“Have I the right to take a human life? To be slain seems not half so fearful as to slay.”
– Henry T. Johns
The 49th Massachusetts Infantry was a Civil War regiment during serving the Union Army. Abraham Lincoln called for hundreds of thousands of men to service beginning in 1862 and the 49th was one of the many units formed from the Presidents command. Established out of Camp Briggs, the 49th Mass, which was only active for 9 months, played an integral role in the Siege of Port Hudson as well as the Battle of Coxs Plantation.
Author Henry T John, a Union soldier himself who received the Medal of Honor, collected hundreds of letters and personal anecdotes from soldiers in the 49th. His book Life with the 49th Massachusetts became the best source on this regiment, a work with woodcut engravings throughout.
