Description
1865 US Civil War 1st ed Knightly Soldier Major Henry Ward Camp Biography Union
A scarce first edition printing of the historical biography, The Knightly Soldier. This fascinating and tragic biographic narrative was written by H. Clay Trumbull and describes the life and military career of Major Henry Ward Camp of the 10th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.
In July 1863, Trumbull and Major Camp were captured by Confederate forces after the assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina and would remain imprisoned for nearly a year until their release in April 1864. In October 1865, Major Camp would be tragically killed in action at the battle of Darbytown Road in Virginia. Trumbull tells this narrative of friendship, suffering, and overcoming adversity in memoriam of his belated friend.
According to Nevins, this work is,
“…composed in the main of letters and diary excerpts, this is a straightforward, unprejudiced narrative of service in North Carolina and Virginia; subject was killed in action late in 1864.”
