Description
1860 Abraham Lincoln 1ed Life & Speeches Hamlin Antebellum Slavery Civil War
A rare 1860 printing of the lives and speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. This work, while very rare, is extremely difficult to note editions. According to BAL,
“This work was issued as presidential campaign material and went into an unknown number of printings, of which several variants exist. The variants were caused by printing from multiple plates, mixed sheets, corrections and changes in the text, a combination of all three factors. The result is a bibliographical morass. ... [BAL considers an absolute sequence a near-impossibility]. ...Add to the above the fact that the bindings vary, as do the imprints, and it becomes quite clear that the number of variants is large.”
However, this printing meets exactly the first edition criteria for the first variant to be printed with the illustration of “The Republican Wigwam at Chicago.”
Collectively written by William Dean Howells and John Lord Hayes (each of whom wrote biographical sketches of these famous Americans), this book features important memorabilia and events from the Chicago Convention as well as famous speeches delivered by Abraham Lincoln up to February of 1860. A truly rare and fascinating piece of Americana.
