A one-page document dated 22 June 1829 sketching the horrors of Brazilian slave ships in the early 19th century. Public health commissioner Constantino Tavares de Macedo writes in Portuguese that during a routine health inspection of incoming slaves, the ship was so full that "they were crowded together one on top of the other, as always happens on such vessels," that he had to disembark everybody into a warehouse.
