Artist: Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) Title: "Yoro Waterfall in Mino Province" Medium: Woodblock print Format: Vertical Size: Oban (14.5x10.5in) Series: A Tour of Waterfalls Province: Japan Paper Type: Washi rice paper Special Notes on The Print: This series was originally Published by Eijudo in the mid 1830's. The keyblocks were printed in blue. Each was signed by the artist "Zen Hokusai Iitsu" The placement of the cartouches and seals is indicated in the notes which follow. The legend here tells of a miraculous spring where water was turned into sake and a poor boy carried it to his old father who was fond of sake. The report of this reached Emperor Gensho who visited the miraculous spring himself and impressed by the filial piety of the boy, decided to change the era name to (Yoro meaning "provision for old age") The title cartouche is shown at the upper left. The artist signature appears upper right followed by the round Kiwame seal and the square publisher seal.
Condition
The print itself is a very good color impression and has never been framed excellent overall with no issues to report.
