Nicola Simbari was born in a small town in Calabria but moved north to Rome with his family as a youngster. He grew to love the art and architecture of the capital and learned about painting as a student at Rome's Accademia di Belle Arti. He lived a long life in Rome where he kept his studio and painted a wide range of subjects, often in a semi-impressionistic yet fairly straight-forward manner and while often using bright colors. Some of his favorite subjects include landscapes, nature, and women in nature or outdoor settings.

This 1968 painting of Venice employs a more muted palette when compared to some of his other works. In the background we see a 'fantasia' of three-storey architectural elements presumably along the Grand Canal. The painting includes a couple of classic black Venetian gondolas docked in the foreground.
