Description
Constantin Kluge
France, Russian Federation, (1912-2003)
Château de Mont l'Évêque
oil on canvas
signed lower right, gilt-framed.
This charming large painting features a wide view of the Château of Mont l'Évêque (near Senlis, just north-east of Paris), built in Gothic (and Neo-Gothic) "troubadour" style. The structure was originally built in the 13th c., destroyed in the 14th c. during the Hundred Years War, and then rebuilt in the 16th c. The painting also focuses on the adjacent banks of the Nonette River (and a pond) and some trees and flowers of the large and colorful Ermenonville Forest. The château is the former summer home of the Bishops of Senlis (until the time of the French Revolution). Today the château is privately owned but its park and gardens remain open to the public.
The scene was painted by Constantin Kluge who was born in Russia, grew up in China, and lived his adult life in Paris where he studied architecture and painting at the Ècole des Beaux Arts. In Paris he also worked as an architect.
acquired: Wally Findlay Galleries, North Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, 1985
