Description
Elie Anatole Pavil
France, Morocco, Russian Federation, (1873-1948)
Encampment
oil on canvas
signed lower right, gilt-framed.
Born in Odessa in the 1870s, Pavil settled permanently in Montmartre (Paris) by 1891. He loved his adopted city and focused on the City of Lights as the theme for the majority of his work: Parisian parks and gardens, Parisian boulevards, Paris' River Seine and life along its banks, Parisians as his subjects, et al.
But Pavil also worked outside the capitol in the French countryside--and this painting is an example of the beautiful impressionistic work he completed there. In this painting we see two horses resting next to their carriage that has been led by a young man attentively standing watch nearby. Sitting next to the carriage we have a couple of woman and children sitting next to a small shelter/ rock formation. The group rests just a few feet from a river and across from a village perched on a hilltop. The peaceful scene takes place on what looks like an idyllic Sunday afternoon.
