North America, United States, New York, New York, ca. 1911 CE; 1919 CE. "Adventure:" BAL 11928, Sisson & Martens, p. 5.; "On the Makaloa Mat:" BAL 11981, Sisson & Martens, p. 10. A wonderful pair of first edition codices by Jack London: "Adventure" from 1911 and "On the Makaloa Mat" from 1919. Published by The Macmillan Company, both books are set in the Pacific Islands: "Adventure" takes place in the Solomon Islands, while "On the Makaloa Mat" contains 7 short stories set in Hawaii. The older of the 2, "Adventure" contains 405 pages featuring a navy cloth cover with white and blue illustration and lettering. The book deals with the themes of colonialism, racism, and the strength of the human spirit, detailing the story of a man running a plantation, who is harassed by native cannibals and finds himself at odds with a bold, liberated feminist woman. Size of larger ("Adventure"): 5.2" L x 1.3" W x 7.6" H (13.2 cm x 3.3 cm x 19.3 cm)

Alternatively, "On the Makaloa Mat" is a collection of brief tales about love, family, and friendship told against the background of Hawaiian history, customs, and lore. Published posthumously, this series of islander stories is comprised of 229 pages enveloped in a sky-blue cloth cover with navy and marigold illustration and lettering.

Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.

Condition
Both are very good without dust jackets. Old owner's stamp on interior of each, with old inscriptions in "Adventure." Both have some light staining to pages and covers, as well as fraying and bending to peripheries and corners of covers.
