Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
North America, United States, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A unique walking cane hand-whittled from wood with birds, deer heads, and anthropomorphic figures carved in relief across the surface. The lower tip has a brass ring to strengthen the wood. The upper neck under the curved handle is signed "GM," presumably the maker. Two antlered deer heads are placed near the initials, above the 6 figures. Each person is dressed in dapper garb consisting of top hats, possibly coattails, and one even holds a cane. The two birds are endearing: gangly herons or cranes with long legs and beaks. This is a wonderful piece of Americana folk art. The wood has developed a lovely patina and smooth surface from age and use. Size: 31" L x 1" W (78.7 cm x 2.5 cm)
Provenance: J. Compton Gallery, Wimberley, Texas, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
