Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. A beautiful textile fragment of a belt or sash known as a "chumpi" composed of tightly-woven camelid fibers from alpaca or llama wool made on a backstrap loom. This is a very long panel, that could be wrapped several times in a decorative fashion by the wearer, securing and accenting the traditional wrapped dress worn by Andean people. The fibers are dyed a vibrant yellow marigold and red hue with a curvilinear pattern down the center. Size: 52" L x 5" W (132.1 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: private Plano, Texas, USA collection, inherited from father in the 1990s

Condition
Textile is in good condition with some minor fraying to threads. Area of discoloration / staining. Mounted in modern times on a vintage blue paper. Tearing and creasing to peripheries of paper.
