Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Ancient Seas, North America, Oklahoma, Bois D'Arc Formation, Devonian, ca. 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago; Eastern Europe, Russia, St. Petersburg, Wolchow River, Lower Ordovician, ca. 457.5 to 443.8 million years ago. A fantastic pair of fossilized trilobites that are preserved in limestone matrixes. The first is a Russian found species Asaphus lepidurus, distinguishable by the relatively flat cephalon head and short genal spines. The other is a slightly upward curving trilobite with lengthier genal spines and is part of the genus known as Huntoniatonia (formerly Huntonia). The posterior pygidial spine resembles a stinger or tail. Both "sea bugs" are well preserved and professionally excavated to be slightly raised above the rest of the surrounding matrix. Size (Asaphus fossil): 2.65" L x 1.5" W (6.7 cm x 3.8 cm); (matrix): 3.25" L x 2.5" W (8.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
Trilobites are a fossil group of extinct marine arthropods that form one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. The first appearance of trilobites in the fossil record defines the base of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (521 million years ago), and they flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Devonian, all trilobite orders except the Proetids died out. Trilobites disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian about 252 million years ago. Trilobites were among the most successful of all early animals, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years!
Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
