Description
A pair of George II carved walnut armchairs circa 1730
(H: 37 1/2 in. W: 27 1/2 in. D: 22 in.)
With carved and pierced vasiform splats having tassel, heart, acanthus, and scroll motifs, shaped crests, scrolled arms with acanthus carving and lion’s head terminals, and cabriole legs with shell and rocaille motifs terminating in hairy paw feet, custom upholstery.

Condition
chair one: repairs to crestrail / stile joints and to armrest / stile joints, with some fill and splits to wood evident, repaired break to upper part of left-facing upright on arm just below lion head terminal, splat with two replaced volutes on either side of bottom section, shoe reattached, and showing significant wear and evidence of fill, same with back part of seat frame, old nail holes to back of seat frame, and some insect holes to rear seat frame and back legs / stiles, the front support blocks are replaced, and there is evidence of glue reinforcement to leg, return / seat frame joints, underside of feet with later wood caps that fill space where there were formerly brass casters; chair two: possible tightening of armrest / stile joints, and evidence of repaired break to upper part of upright on left-facing arm just below lion head terminal, shoe reattached with some visible evidence of fill and former holes, as well as to rear seat frame rail, retains all four original support blocks, front two leg interiors with old iron braces installed to seat frame for support, minor water spotting to rear legs, some scattered evidence of insect holes, with a significant area of damage to inside of front right-facing leg and showing signs of former fill, wood caps installed to underside of feet where brass casters would have been installed
