Description
Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) Title: Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road Size: Oban Each Sheet Size in Inches (10.5x14.5in) Overall (31.5x14.5in) Paper Type: Washie Rice Paper Medium: Woodblock print Province: Japan Format: Horizontal-Triptych. Special Notes: The title of this piece is a spoof of the fifty-three stations on the Tokaido, which are the rest areas along the coastal route that ran from Edo to Kyoto. The work is spread over three prints (triptych format), and each of the 55 illustrations of cats is a play on words based on the names of the 53 stations plus Nihonbashi and Kyoto, the beginning and end points of the Tokaido route. Kuniyoshi was famous for being a cat-lover, and the cats in this piece are lovingly portrayed, each one capturing a different aspect of a cats charm in a humorous way with great accuracy and careful observation.
