A Chinese carved porcelain boat
signed Chen Guozhi (Chinese, b. 1931), 19th century
A lemon-shaped boat with six individually carved figures engaging in various activities. The central half-domed piece, enclosing figures around a table, is removable to reveal a lower level of the boat. With signature and previous collector sticker; sold with associated wooden stand.
H: 2 1/4, W: 3 3/8, D: 2 1/4 in.
H: 5.71, W: 8.57, D: 5.71 cm.
Provenance: Estate of Yip Hon (1904-1997). Nicknamed Kwai Wong (translated as Ghost King), Yip Hon was a gambling tycoon in South China. He a amassed great wealth in the casinos there, through his technique of listening dice, eventually opening his own casino.
