Description
4 Civil War-era Photographs
A group of four Civil War-era photographs, including one ambrotype and three tintypes, also known as ferrotypes. Although all undated, the group can be roughly dated based on the clothes worn by the individuals and the studios producing them.
The ambrotype is a sixth plate portrait of a well-groomed man in a suit and bow tie, housed in a cloth-covered wooden case with red velvet lining. Produced by Kimball & Cooper, New York.
The three tintypes are of various family groups, measuring between 2.25" x 3.375" and 2.375" x 4". The first is a group of five people - three women and two men. Hand-colored. The second is two young men, with a backstamp from 299 Broad Street, Newark, N.J. The third is a young man and woman, possibly a mixed race couple, with a Sunbeam Gallery, New Haven backstamp. Also hand-colored.
The cover of the ambrotype has become separated, and the image has some scratching and cracking. Soiling and toning to the tintypes, with varying degrees of clarity. Overall very good.
