He purchased the Maud Lewis when he went up to Yarmouth NS to visit a family friend.We lived in Bedford NS and my father and his friend ( Paul Ritchie) would go up to Yarmouth to visit in-laws ( the Dexter family). The story as I know it was Paul and my father went up to Yarmouth to get some free lobster. On their way back to Bedford, they stopped to buy one of Mauds paintings ( as she had paintings out on the road for sale). Dad said he paid 5 dollars for the painting. My mother always complained how ugly the painting was but my father would not part with it. I am not sure of the exact date dad purchased the painting, but when we lived in Bedford I was 6 ( I was born in 1960) and we moved to BC when I was 10. Dad may have purchased the painting before 1966 as we did live in Dartmouth prior to moving to Bedford. I however only remember seeing the painting in the house in Bedford.I remember him saying there was a little old lady selling pictures on the side of the road and she was all crippled up and he felt sorry for her and bought one of her paintings. My grandmother who was an antiques dealer in Lunenburg NS told my father on one of her visits to BC: you know Marcel you should look after that painting better because it is going to be worth money one day. The painting was on his floor in his matting shop. I hope this helps clarify that this is a real Maud Lewis painting to my knowledge.Thank you.Sincerely, Rosemary.
