Description
"Path on Bridgham Farm, Providence", 1900. Whitaker sought out & painted the hidden and less traveled landscapes of Rhode Island realizing that with the rapid growth of American Industrialization these spiritual enclaves were disappearing. He documented many farms that were important to the history of the state but were quickly disappearing like the Bridgham Farm. Oil on canvas. George W. Whitaker (1841-1911). SLL & dated. Title inscribed in pencil on stretcher bar verso. Dimensions: 36" x 26". Framed: 39" x 29". Whitaker was a leading landscape painter in New England in late 19th century & a founder of Providence Art Club & played role in founding of RI School of Design in 1877. Exhibited widely & works in RISD Museum, RI Historical Society & PAC among others.
