Description
"Gondola on a Venetian Canal". Oil on canvas. SLL. Dimensions: 16" x 24 1/2". Unframed. For generations Venice has captured the imagination of artists across the world. Whether it be the vedute works of Canaletto in the 18th century or John Singer Sargent in the 19th century, artists made pilgrimages to paint the city. Rhode Island born Walter Francis Brown found Venice so enthralling, he established a studio at Palazzo da Mula and he spent most of his life painting "La Serenissima". His residence, Palazzo da Mula Morosini, on the Grand Canal, became an icon when painted by Claude Monet during his trip to Venice in 1908. Brown exhibited in four Paris Salons when painting in Paris and continued to send works back for exhibition at the Providence Art Club. As an expatriate he became nationally known for his painting and his illustrations for many American authors and magazines.
