Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Canada, northwestern Quebec, Inuit, Port Harrison / Inukjuak, ca. 1987 CE. Signed in Inuktitut syllabics with year and "c No 5-18247" on base. An adorable soapstone carving by prominent Inuit artist Daniel Inukpuk (Canadian Inuit, b. 1942) depicting a mama seal with her flipper lovingly embracing one of her pups, as another peaks up at the side, emerging from the icy waters below. An endearing depiction of maternal intimacy in the natural world, all carefully sculpted from lustrous jet-black soapstone with silky smooth surfaces, reminiscent of the seals' sleek coats, and white recessed areas to delineate their sweet faces. Daniel Inukpuk is a renowned carver, printmaker, and draftsman whose works are in the permanent collections of several important museums including the National Gallery of Canada and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Size: 4.5" L x 5.6" W x 2.6" H (11.4 cm x 14.2 cm x 6.6 cm)
