Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A beautiful silvered copper repousse icon of the Crucifixion of Christ featuring a gilt crucifix at the center with a pair of angels and God the Heavenly Father in the clouds above as 4 saints - Saint Mary Magdalene, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and Saint Longinus - mourn the savior below. God the Father is crowned by a triangular halo representing the Holy Trinity, while the city gates of Jerusalem can be seen in the background beneath Christ. Each figure is labelled by liberal remains of Cyrillic inscriptions. Green velvet covers the wooden backing of the piece. Size: 10.3" W x 12.1" H (26.2 cm x 30.7 cm)
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
