Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Western Europe, Italy, Venice, ca. early 19th to mid-20th century CE; found in West Africa. A fine collection of Venetian glass trade bead strands that can be restrung into eye-catching necklaces- the raffia strand has 43 red beads, and the other has 46 tan elongated beads on a cotton cord. The red with creamy yellow and white cores in tubular and spherical shapes are corneline d'Aleppo beads which translates to "carnelians of Aleppo," the red glass exterior comparative to the semi-precious carnelian stones. These beads are formed by two layers or compounds- an inner core and outer red coating. Originally the center core was a white or gray hue, after the 1830s yellow made by winding became popular, the white and yellow cores are both included on this strand. The strand of matte beige beads are muted pink and tan hues with splotches of red or blue on the surface. Both strands can be restrung as one desired for wearability! Size (red strand doubled): 28" L (71.1 cm); (largest red bead): 1" L x 0.6" W (2.5 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition
Beads are strung on modern raffia and cotton fiber cords, and cords are slightly fraying in some areas. Beads could easily be restrung for wearability. Expected age-commensurate surface wear, nicks, and chips to peripheries of some beads, and light fading to coloration. Otherwise very good.
