Description
Central Europe, Italy, Venice, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A collection of chevron glass trade beads, strung in ascending sizes on a modern wire as a wearable necklace with modern nickel terminal beads and lobster clasp. Although they are all chevrons, each bead has its own unique patterning, as each was hand-crafted. Chevron beads were first created by glass bead makers of Venice and Murano, Italy at the end of the 14th century CE. These drawn beads were traditionally made from glass canes, that were shaped using specifically constructed star molds to create their characteristic patterns. Beads like these were used by European traders to purchase goods in Africa and served as currency on multiple continents. Size: 21" L (53.3 cm); largest bead: 1" Diameter (2.5 cm)
