Description
[WORLD WAR II. 1943-1945.] A Wartime scrapbook of ephemera and photographs, belonging to Harriet Dean (1892-1964), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989). A note in Elsie's hand idenitifies the book as: "World War II - complete record of all local activities - of Pal, Pellie, Kai [Harriet, Elsie, and Micaela] - and friends and relations". There are approx. 35 leaves (material on both sides), with items glued/taped//tipped-on/loose, many pages with layers of material, including photographs, telegrams, numerous newspaper clippings, event invitations, some postcards, and numerous letters (often voluminous). Condition: The book is unbound/pages loose; pages are toned with light soiling, but ephemera and photos are in good condition. EXAMPLES OF CONTENTS: -- Photo snapshots Harriet, Elsie, and Kai as part of the First Aid Group of Carmel. -- Photo snapshots of Hawaii. -- Multiple letters, including illustrated pages, from Micaela's husband, artist Ralph DuCasse, who worked in Military Intelligence during WWII, and was stationed in the Philippines, Okinawa, and Tokyo. -- Numerous handwritten and typed letters from friends and family, including English artist Adrian Gillespie Beach (with one signed watercolor, 1945); other senders including David Paul Cambell, John Collins, John Ehlinger, Robert Fitch, John de Gazero, Alan Kass, Richmond Kelly Turner, Henry Whitaker, and William H. Yeisley. -- An 8in x 10in photo of Admiral Raymond A. Spruance delivering a speech. -- Photocopy letters to the Carmel/Monterey Aircraft Warning Services (Harriet and Elsie were volunteers, their ID cards are included), from Major Otis B. Baker, Sec. of War, Henry L. Stimson, and Robert F. Frost. -- Harriet's War Ration book. -- Obituaries and commemorative notices, etc. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
