Description
ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. 1882-1945. Two letters (one with stamped envelope), dated 1928. One is to William Gardner Hale, in support of the presidential nomination of Al Smith; the other is to Hale's daughter, extending condolences for her father's death. 1.) TLS. One-sheet letter, September 24, 1928, on personal letterhead. 10 3/8in x 7 1/8in. To Professor William Gardner Hale (1849-1928), Shippan Point, Connecticut. The letter makes a passionate case for the presidential nomination of NY Governor Al Smith. Of Woodrow Wilson, Roosevelt writes: "To me, the contemptuous casting aside of all of President Wilson's wonderful dreams of a better world, and the substitution of crass materialism and a dollar-and-cents viewpoint of everything has been a world tragedy". Condition: Toned, two folds with edge tears/creases, light spotting/soiling. Lacking original envelope (in an envelope with Gardner family notations). 2.) TLS. One-sheet letter, on Roosevelt's Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland letterhead, sent from Warm Springs, Georgia, December 5, 1928, with envelope. Addressed to Virginia S. Hale, extending sympathies for the deaths of her parents (William Gardner Hale and Harriet Swinburne Hale), and referencing President Wilson and Governor Smith. Condition: Several creases, including at corners; folded twice; toned, light soiling/spotting. The envelope has edge tears/losses, creases, and is cut open at one end; tape repairs. Together with: HALE, VIRGINIA SWINBURNE (1887-1981). An ALS from William Gardner Hale's daughter, describing the above Roosevelt letters, May 20, 1946. Single sheet, two-page letter, 7 1/8in x 5 1/8in. Signed, "Naya", as Hale was known to friends. Condition good; folded in half From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989). Virginia S. Hale was a close friend to Elsie Martinez and her partner, Harriet Dean.
