Anonymous (European - possibly Italian, active in the 19th century). Landscape with Church and Landscape with Temple. Both oil on wood, ca. 1820s. Both have indistinguishable artist signatures at lower right. A lovely pair of pastoral paintings, each portraying a pair of figures in a magnificent setting along the European countryside in a manner reminiscent of 18th century Rococo conversation pieces. The first portrays a woman and a fisherman beside a body of water with a viaduct in the midground and a Greek or Roman temple atop a hill in the background. The second painting features a pair of women on either side of a river with a towering, twisted tree at the center, dominating the composition, while the background features a town on the left and a farm and church to the right. The signature on this painting appears to read as "Rigo." A lovely pair of miniature paintings mounted in matching frames. Both have indistinguishable artist signatures in lower right and are fit with wood frames with suspension hooks for display on versos. Some nicks to frames.
