Description
An early 20th century German walnut and gilt mounted German table clock with ting-tang striking
signed Lenzkirch Clock Company Model 52, Number 1,000,008
the Empire style arched rectangular case with flambeau urn finials, the front with chamfered corners with caryatid mounts and applied foliate and winged maskhead decoration on foliate scroll feet, the silvered Roman dial with blued steel fleur-des-lys hands, the twin spring barrel movement with anchor escapement and adjustable suspension spring, with two separate gongs and hammers for ting-tang striking, the back plate stamped 52 Lenzkirch 1 Million 80 and the suspension block stamped Geschueizt, 34cms high
Footnotes:
Lenzkirch Clock Company was established in the Black Forest by Edward
Hauser and production began in 1851. The company's primary focus was initially on making regulator clocks, and that commitment to quality and precision continued into the manufacture of other clocks. Their name was always associated with quality movements. In the 20th century they were taken over by Junghans, before eventually closing permanently around 1932/33. Their total output of clocks is estimated at around 2.5 million.
Based on available records, the current clock is assigned a tentative date of 1900, though these clocks are notoriously difficult to date accurately and a margin of perhaps +/- 10 years should always be considered.
Geschueizt on the suspension block means 'protected', referring to the copyright of the suspension block system, which appears to be a variation on Brocot suspension.
