1pp document that details a request from a plantation owner named “James Akin” of Union County, Arkansas, who had fives slaves conscripted into service by the Confederate army. Enslaved men were often used as labor to build fortifications, etc., and slave owners were compensated by the Confederate government for temporary conscription of their slaves. In this document, Akins requests his five slaves “Nelson, Wash, Jack, Berry, and Jerry” be returned to him from the “southern Confederacy,” as planting season was about to begin.
