Description
Identified brass-bodied drum used by musician Thomas Gibbons, Company E, 31st New Jersey Infantry. The drum heads are intact and held in place by the piece's original wood hoops, painted red and exhibiting some wear from field use. The heart-shaped leather rope tension ears are original to the drum but, as is commonly the case, the rope itself is a modern replacement. One drum head bears a very strong stenciled ink ID reading “Thomas Gibbons Co. E N.J.” with the numeral “31” penciled to the left of the company designation.
During its service, the 31st New Jersey was assigned to the Army of the Potomac's 1st Division, First Corps, and saw combat at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Gibbons, having enlisted as a musician in Sept. 1862, was mustered out with his regiment upon the completion of his enlistment.
Accompanying this fine drum is a pair of period wooden drumsticks. Measures 16 inches in diameter, 13 inches in height.
