Description
Europe, Germany / France, Imperial City of Strassburg, Renaissance to Early Modern Period, ca. mid-16th to early 17th century CE. Ink on paper. Designed by Tobias Stimmer (Swiss, 1539 to 1584). Engraved by Christoffel van Sichem I (Flemish, 1546 to 1624) and Christoph Stimmer (Swiss, 1490 to 1562). A wonderful collection of 9 woodcuts printed in black ink on laid paper, all cut out from "Von Ankunfft und Ursprung des Romischen Reichs" or "On the Arrival and Origin of the Roman Empire." The book features text from "Ab Urbe Condita Libri" or "History of Rome" by Livy (Roman, 59 BCE to 17 CE) and "Virgilius orator an poeta" or "Epitome of Roman History" by Lucius Annaeus Florus (Roman, ca. 74 to 130 CE) translated to German from Latin by Zacharius Muntzer (German, 1530 to 1586). Size on paper (all about the same): 6.8" W x 6.1" H (17.3 cm x 15.5 cm); Size of print (all about the same): 5.7" W x 5.3" H (14.5 cm x 13.5 cm)
Published in the Imperial City of Strassburg, the book was first printed by Muntzer in 1568. However, the illustrated edition was first published by Theodosius Rihel (German, 1557 to 1621) in 1574. Likely from a later edition of the illustrated version, these prints are all glued to laid paper and cut from the following pages: 9 to 10, 19 to 20, 37 to 38, 43 to 44, 53 to 54, 255 to 256, 371 to 372, 618 to 617, and 817 to 818.
