Description
Originally listed at $250
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. An interesting gathering of three hand-carved wooden items from the Toraja culture of Sulawesi Island. First is a carving of two nude figures squatting atop an integral rectangular plinth, the man holding his arms aloft, and the woman with her arms placed atop her womb. The second item is a box lid or a small lintel of a rough triangular form with pointed tips, a recessed mortise on the underside, abstract zoomorphic creatures on the upper faces, and a row of smooth scales on the top ridge. The largest item is perhaps a furniture component with grooved lateral joints, a small mortise on one side of the body, and a shallow mortise on the other boasting an incised abstract anthropomorphic figure. Size of largest (furniture component): 2.3" W x 13.2" H (5.8 cm x 33.5 cm).
