East Asia, Japan, late Edo to Meiji period, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A beautiful ensemble of wood utensils for papier mache - a bowl, 6 spoons, and tongs - all enveloped in black lacquer. The spoons and tongs all present elegant forms with a lustrous gold-pigment covering the bowl of each. Alternatively, the bowl is elaborately decorated with a scene of 3 figures at a table adorning its basin. Size of largest: 4.4" Diameter x 1.1" H (11.2 cm x 2.8 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Repairs to bowl and 1 spoon with break lines visible. Stable hairline fissures to bowl and another spoon. All have expected nicks, chips, and abrasions, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, tongs and 5 spoons are intact and all 8 pieces are excellent with nice remaining pigments.
