Description

Lyndon B. Johnson Civil Rights, Women. PSA Gem MT 10 TLS, On White House Letterhead

A letter on White House letterhead regarding the twenty-fourth national convention of the Young Women's Christian Association, boldly signed "Lyndon B. Johnson" at the conclusion in black felt tip pen. The word "annual", located in the first paragraph, has been crossed out and replaced with the word "national" written lightly in pencil. Slabbed TLS, measuring 6.75" x 8.75", dated April 20, 1967, Washington, D.C. Very minor soiling in places around the bottom half of page not affecting text or signature, else near fine. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA to the overall size of 9.75" x 13.25" receiving a grade of GEM MT 10.

In part:
"Your contribution to the welfare of our Nation, through your efforts to promote the happiness and well-being of women and girls… is without measure. You have won our gratitude, also, for your diligent and successful efforts to further the cause of Civil Rights, to stimulate community action for health, education, and beautification, and to improve international understanding."

During his presidency, Johnson's platform sought to expand Civil Rights in the United States, notably through the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. The Young Women's Christian Association, now known simply as YWCA USA, was founded in New York City in 1858. The organization's mission statement currently works to "eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all".
