Description
PIUS VI (1717-1799) Pope from 1775 to 1799, captured by Napoleon's forces and died in captivity. His tragic pontificate was the longest of the 18th century. Manuscript Document, 1p. 22 x 19.5 in., Rome, October 1, 1795, a vellum papal bull in the name of Pope Pius VI, in Latin (untranslated), featuring a fine calligraphic introduction. The signatures of several Roman Curia appear underneath the bottom flap. Attached to the document by a faded red and yellow cord is the original seal (‘lead bulla’) of Pius VI. Some staining and holes throughout.
