Description
LEO X (1475-1521) The last non-priest to be elected Pope, believed by the Protestants to have caused the Reformation. He excommunicated Martin Luther with a bull (which he publicly burned). Seal (‘lead bulla’) of Pope Leo X, 1.5 in. dia., featuring his name on the recto and a portrait engraving on the verso. Bullas were used to authenticate papal bulls. Remnants of the yellow cord used to attach it to a papal bull remain. In fine condition. Accompanied by an 8 x 10 in. steel engraving of Leo.
