Description
1781 Catholic Indulgence Pope Pius VI Cardinal Bishop Carlo Rezzonico Italy Gold
A fascinating piece of Catholic Church history, this handwritten indulgence was made out to the family of Lonzi Apermascher Elvetus, dated April 18, 1781. Signed by Carlo Rezzonico, Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina.
Engraved on the front of the folded indulgence is an engraving of a papal armorial that includes elements of Pius VIs coat of arms (papal tiara, crossed keys, and arms of Pius VI at center), along with a crowned, double-headed eagle (perhaps for the Holy Roman Empire). Above the indulgence description is a portrait engraving of Pope Pius VI. Traces of an armorial seal can be seen embossed below the armorial engraving and indulgence description. The description itself appears to be written in gold ink and then signed by numerous family members.
