(1887 - 1975) Chinese general and politician who led Chinese forces against the Japanese in World War II. His Nationalist forces resisted the communists under Mao, but were eventually defeated and established a new government on Formosa (Taiwan). The text accompanying the photo explains that it was taken the previous October during a rare public appearance on the balcony of the Taipei Presidential Palace.
