Description
Souvenir postcard from the RMS 'Carpathia', the passenger ship which navigated dangerous ice fields to arrive two hours after the 'Titanic' had sunk, rescuing 705 survivors from the ship's lifeboats. The 5.25 x 3.5 inch postally-used war-date postcard bears an initialed note: 'Having a great voyage thus far. Feeling fine. Write soon.' Canceled in Washington on Sep. 26, 1917. The front of the postcard displays a silk insert showing two hands clasped beneath crossed American and British flag, with the legend: 'Hands Across the Sea Woven in Silk R.M.S. CARPATHIA'. Very good. Less than a year later, on 17 July 1918, the 'Carpathia' sunk after being torpedoed three times by the German submarine U-55 off the southern Irish coast.
