Description
Rectangular brass plated belt buckle, 2.5 x 2 in. with unmarked leather tab. The buckle shows at its center; a nickel silver image in relief, a five-pointed star above a crescent that bears the Arab script ‘Askar-I Shahaneh’ (‘Imperial Army’) held within the circular silver badge. This M1909 buckle, which is an adaption of the Imperial German M1895, was extensively used by the Ottoman Forces throughout World War I, mainly across the Balkans and the Middle Eastern Theater. The brass finish has chipped away at the top right corner, revealing its copper base metal. Also present is a 4.5 in. section of the other end of the belt, terminated with a brass catch ring sewn into the belt fragment displaying various Arabic script markings stamped into the reverse side. Overall good condition.
