Description
Metal statue, 14 in. tall, of the Patron Saint of Bremen, Bremer Roland. He stands tall in his armor, with a sword in one hand and a shield bearing the imperial coat of arms affixed to his left shoulder. No markings. This piece replicates the much larger stone statue which appears in front of the Bremen Town Hall since 1404. A few minor spots of wear, overall fine. This lot was received by us from the estate of Lt. Col. Bion Welker through his granddaughter. BION WELKER (1894-1981) was a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel who convinced 350 SS troops to surrender in Paris without a shot. He later accompanied British forces into the city of Bremen where he also served as military governor from 1945-1946.
