Description
A silver platter bearing the Bremen coat of arms, 20.5 x 14 in., purity stamp of ‘835’ appearing on the bottom. Some scratching throughout, else very good; WITH a second silver platter, 17.5 x 12.75 in., made by Lawrence B. Smith whose maker mark appears on the bottom. Some noticeable tarnish on the base of the platter, easily fixed. Both platters weigh approx. four pounds. Overall, very good. This lot was received by us from the estate of Lt. Col. Bion Welker through his granddaughter. BION WELKER (1894-1981) was a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel who convinced 350 SS troops to surrender in Paris without a shot. He accompanied British forces into the city of Bremen where he also served as military governor from 1945-1946.
