Description
A dark stone apex stele probably depicting the last of the Tirthankaras, Mahavira, seated in the paryanka position with his hands resting in his lap in dhyanamudra, surmounted by a multi-layered honorary parasol and surrounded by the 23 predecessor Tirthankaras. Long inscription engraved on the base. For a related example in the iconography of the 23 tirthankaras see Zacke, 10 December 2022, Asian Art Holiday sale, lot 242 and related mention of the work in the Nortn Simon Museum, Acc. no. F.1975.17.12.S.Provenance: private collection Milan, Italy. Lot accompanied by export certificate.
